Spanish Bank BBVA Now the Official Bank of the N.B.A.
Spanish bank BBVA will be the official bank of the NBA in the United States, Spain and Puerto Rico for the next four years. The cost: 100 million dollars (around 79 million euros); the agreement also includes sponsorship of the WNBA and the Development League.
BBVA operates in the U.S. through BBVA Compass and has 723 branches in the country, located mainly in the South, particularly Texas and Alabama). The bank’s presence has grown through its presence in Puerto Rico and subsequent acquisitions of several American banks: Valley Bank (2004), Laredo National Bank (2005), Texas State Bank (2006), State National Bank (2007), Compass Bank (2007) and Guaranty Bank (2009).
First, BBVA displayed its logo on the jerseys of the teams that competed in the WNBA finals, the Atlanta Dream and Seattle Storm (the latter team won the championship). This is a new development, since up until now, it was up to the franchises to reach agreements with brands, and not the league itself.
