Superbowl XLIX – Breaking Hispanic Viewership Records?

Written by Christopher Stanley on . Posted in Marketing, Sports

Superbowl XLIX

Superbowl XLIX

From Superbowl XLIV (2010 New Orleans vs. Indianapolis) to Superbowl XLVIII (2014 Seattle vs. Denver) the overall viewership numbers from Nielsen have held relatively steady with over 100 million viewers. Yet at the same time, the Hispanic viewership numbers have been increasing. This doesn’t come as a surprise, and in fact each year the Hispanic viewership numbers break new records: from 8 million for XLIV (2010) to nearly 18 million for XLVII (2013).

Advertising for Good

One of the more interesting conferences that I get to attend each year is the ANA (Association of National Advertisers) Multicultural & Diversity Conference. Although the many examples of inclusive “Total Market” strategies was a key focus of the event, a key thought that repeatedly came up for me was the way that advertisers were actually making a difference for the better.

My career is in marketing, yet like everyone else there are plenty of times that I can find advertising to get in the way of the program, website, or video that I want to watch. It is, however, very impactful when marketers create interesting ads that can not only entertain, but also challenge some social norms. While the Hispanic community is always a major focus of the event, this year there was an increase in examples of marketers including the LGBT community as well as the disabled community in their efforts. Here are a few examples of some award-winning campaigns that are worth sharing.

Do Gringos Prefer the World Cup in Spanish?

Univision: Copa de la FIFA Brasil 2014

Univision: Copa de la FIFA Brasil 2014

It pains me a bit to admit, but kudos to Univision for the streaming coverage options of the World Cup. In our offices, we have been streaming the World Cup continuously. And while our office is fully bilingual, it is interesting that the neighboring companies in our building stop by and – despite not understanding the announcers – admit that the excitement in tone, etc. is better in español.

At least for the Group rounds, there was no need to have a cable package from participating cable providers (starting July 4 it is necessary), allowing them to separate from ESPN (the other provider in the US). When I sent out the link to non-Hispanic friends, they were more than happy to watch the streaming in Spanish and now they even know that pelota/balón = ball. They may even be on their way to learning the language accidentally.

Dispelling Misconceptions: Research is Key

Combining travel and research the patchwork of the Hispanic market becomes much clearer. Not always seen, when you look at what is really happening it is quite different that what is commonly believed.

Combining travel and research the patchwork of the Hispanic market becomes much clearer. Not always seen, when you look at what is really happening it is quite different that what is commonly believed.

Working with the Hispanic and Latin American markets, I have the opportunity to not only visit the different markets, but also the brands and agencies that are based in the different cities. While advertisers may have many misconceptions in trying to reach these markets, what is interesting is that there are also significant misconceptions about the markets in which they reside.

If you live and work in much of the Southwest, your overall understanding may skew towards believing that the US Hispanic market is decidedly of Mexican origin… Whereas if you head to Miami, you may not even be sure if you should initiate conversations in English or Spanish, and the mix of countries of origin will skew decidedly non-Mexican. Even in parts of Mexico City, you may be surrounded by many with Argentinian descent as global populations continue to change.
