Netflix Streaming

As time goes on, the digital era continues to offer us more services and greater convenience to do things that we couldn’t have imagined before. Today, for example, we have video calls, online information, online storage services, digital ads, etc…. all these things which are now quite common.

One of the technologies that is growing is online entertainment services. These days you don’t have to leave your home to rent a video or purchase movies just to watch them once and store them forever in a box of memories. Today you can rent movies online from the comfort of your home; in fact, there are Video Streaming services for only $9.00 per month.

One of the largest companies in the world, Netflix, has offered this type of service worldwide since 1997. Netflix has revolutionized the digital cinematography market in Latin America; Reed Hastings, founder and CEO said that when he visited Mexico last December.

“We have grown so much in the last three years that we now have approximately 5 million subscribers in Latin America. It’s an incredible growth and we thank our subscribers for that,” said Hastings.

This company has changed the online entertainment experience for people of all ages. It has also contributed to the growth of online digital services, getting more users to be part of the digital era and sparking the interest of other companies to get involved in this type of market.

Internet.org

On January 14 President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, and Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Founder and CEO, announced an Internet.org partnership with Colombia to provide free Internet services to all Colombians.

“Before today, only about 50% of Colombians had access to the internet. By launching the Internet.org app on the Tigo network today, we’re giving people free access to basic internet services,” wrote Mark Zuckerberg on his Facebook page.

Internet.org, founded in 2013 by Zuckerberg, was created to bring Internet access to the two-thirds of the total population who do not have Internet access. It gives users access to free basic services in areas of education, health, communication, jobs, finance, and local information. Stopped and Failed Projects of 2014

Google Glass, Project Tango, smartwatches, TVs with 5K resolution, projects, and technologies launched in 2014.

Since the year has ended and we commonly assess what has happened in previous months, it would be interesting to review what has become of some of the projects announced as possible surprises, what has become of the work, investment and strategies dedicated to them, and whether they grew, disappeared, or merged.

Google Glass

In 2012 Google started the beta phase of Google Glass, a device that since its first announcement and later launch has elicited all kinds of reactions from developers.

Technology experts list some errors that the product has. The first flaw that they indicate is that the brand of the world’s most powerful search engine had a great marketing campaign, but took too long to make it for sale. Secondly, they say that the price is too high for the market.

The Threat to the Chilean Digital System

Caution: Switch off internet in cases of political dissent

In July of 2014, a group of Chilean Parliament members presented a report to Congress stating that the first digital newspaper in Chile was El Mostrador, which in 2003 was also recognized by a body of government. Just a few years earlier in 2001, the same Congress passed Law N° 19.733 which regulates freedom of opinion and information, the exercise of journalism, and social media. These laws widened legislation’s reach to protecting the corresponding good use of media, regardless of the platform (physical or digital).

The same group of Congress members, after revealing their intention to various players within the sector, has proposed to modify the above-mentioned law so that: everyone who has a website or social network with four weekly posts or publications is considered responsible for a social medium. Up to this point it might sound like a reasonable idea, but when you look at the possible consequences, it’s clearly not about a simple modification. According to the judgment of Rayén Campusano, lawyer at the University of Chile, the proposal would mean, among other implications:

Yaveo Service Begins

Yaveo

Yaveo

Due to the popularity of Netflix and Hulu, there has been an explosion of online content providers. This week, U.S. Hispanic consumers just got a new streaming option from DirecTV called “Yaveo”. Yaveo will be Spanish-only, and just like with Netflix, there is no contract or DirecTV satellite subscription required. Going after a Spanish-language audience makes a lot of sense for DirecTV. Not only is the size of this audience growing as part of demographic shifts in the U.S., Latinos also watch 90 minutes more online video per month than the average U.S. consumer, according to a recent Nielsen report.
