Turning online opportunities into real opportunities – the dilemma

Written by Eduardo Reyes on . Posted in U.S. Hispanic

“Equal access does imply equal opportunities,” says the report of the OCDE. According to a recent study, the differences in  access to the Internet defines the levels of access to studentsopportunities. In countries like Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Switzerland, more than 98% of disadvantaged young people have Internet access at home. In some low- and middle-income countries (Turkey, Mexico, Chile and Costa Rica) only 45% of disadvantaged young people have Internet access and that is mainly at school.

However, if the lack of equality is a problem, a bigger challenge is what the users do with that access. Actually, in a comparison to countries where the access is practically the same, disadvantaged students are less likely to be aware of the opportunities that digital technology offers. According to the research of the OCDE, “They may not have the knowledge or skills required to turn online opportunities into real opportunities.”

The data for the study was gathered as part of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a worldwide study of 15-year-old students’ performance in mathematics, science and reading.

Election day 2016: Hispanic voter impact

Written by Christopher Stanley on . Posted in Research, U.S. Hispanic

The upcoming 2016 U.S. elections promise not only to be interesting (to put it mildly), but also will show the impact of a voter population that is continually more diverse. According to a recent post on Pew Hispanic…..1 in 3 eligible voters will be Hispanic, black, Asian or other ethnic minority with much of that growth coming from Hispanic eligible voters.

Looking at 2012 – 2016, while non-Hispanic white voters outnumber those of ethnic or racial minorities, the share continues to slip. Hispanic (17%) and Asian (16%) are the groups with the strongest percentage growth, and with the numbers of Hispanic and Black eligible voters being nearly even there will continue to be an increasing impact on the elections by non-White voter groups.

Quick hits from the article:
– Non-Hispanic whites: 69% of eligible voters, but accounted for 76% of all eligible voters who died between 2012-2016
– Non-Hispanic whites: only accounted for 57% of new eligible voters who turned 18 between 2012-2016
– Racial and Ethnic minorities who make up 31% of the electorate accounted for 43% of new eligible voters born in the U.S. who became eligible in that period.

Adding in immigration among Hispanic and Asian groups, these groups will continue to have an increasing impact on the U.S. elections going forward and the candidates and political parties should continue to increase their efforts to be inclusive of these groups.

The first ever national study on Hispanic health risks and leading causes of death in the United States has been released by the CDC and there is some good news and some bad news.

Some are calling it a “paradox” as overall, Hispanics are generally healthier than their non-Hispanic white peers when it comes to health in spite of the greater socioeconomic burdens from higher poverty rates (one in four Hispanics lives below the poverty line), language barriers (one in three Hispanics have limited English proficiency), and a lower insured rate (Hispanics are three times as likely to be uninsured).

Latinos in Philanthropy

Last month I attended for the 4th consecutive year the Gala by Latino Community Foundation of San Francisco. This year’s 10th anniversary Con Sabor Latino Gala was one of best that I have attended.

I walked into a ballroom with more than 500 guests, all gathered with the same purpose. The Latino Community Foundation strengthens Latino philanthropy by providing capacity building grants and investing in Latino communities, increasing the participation of Latinos in philanthropy, and fostering policy change through philanthropy to enhance equity and inclusiveness.
