Economy in LATAM

Economy in LATAM

2015 has begun, and with it we evaluate 2014 to make projections for this year, learn from our mistakes, and outline new goals. At the midpoint and the conclusion of each year, different organizations and experts publish studies and opinion pieces about the Latin American economy. We present a few of them here.

CEPAL’s Preliminary Overview of Economic Growth:

On December 2, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) published their preliminary overview of the economies of the region, stating that an estimated 2.2% growth is expected in 2015 – greater than the 1.1% growth of 2014. According to the ECLAC study, Central America, Haiti, and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean are expected to grow at a rate of 4.1%, South America at 1.8%, and the English-speaking Caribbean at 2.2%. Among the countries with the most growth this year are Panama, Bolivia, Peru, Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua. Detailed summary here.

Nowadays, more and more entrepreneurs are convinced and claim, “Entrepreneurship is no longer an art, it’s a science”. That’s probably the reason a book like “Lean Startup” has become so famous. In it, its author, Eric Ries so categorically states, “Startup success can be engineered by following the process, which means it can be learned, which means it can be taught.”

Within this simple statement it is possible to recognize a singular characteristic, which is that entrepreneurship knowledge is “transferable”. Wow! Take note, this is very important.

Hispanics Celebrate Their Independence Month

Salvadorean dish PupusasI think this is a great time to write about Hispanic Heritage. September is a very important month for Latinos because it is the month that many countries gained their independence. For example, Mexico achieved independence on September 16th, 1810, and for most Central American countries independence came on September 15th, 1821.

Those who have left their countries and now live in the U.S. still commemorate that day here. Many get together with the family around traditional food. For example, Salvadorans are known for their pupusas. As for Mexicans, you might see them celebrating over some morisqueta, a very traditional and delicious dish, among many others.

Digital Advertising 2016

Digital Advertising 2016

While here in the United States Internet advertising and especially mobile are making big strides, Latin America is not staying far behind. Traditional advertising is in decline and advertising agencies in Latin America are faced with the challenge of how to reach the public in a more effective way.

We still see TV commercials and hear radio commercials that make us laugh. However, we only spend a few hours in front of a TV relative to the amount of time we spend in front of a computer or cell phone.
