For brands, having an online presence in social media has grown quickly, from being the work of an intern to becoming a high-tech tool of the marketing department. In addition to the typical, already well-established networks on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, platforms like Tumblr, Instagram, and Pinterest are the new channels of digital influence. They are used for everything, from real-time customer service to electronic commerce.

The days of organic outreach and securing fans solely by virtue of engaging content are numbered, and marketers now have to make greater financial investments to get creative.
